Hi, I'm Adam Griffiths, a Computer Science Student and Freelance Web Applications and CodeIgniter developer based in Shrewsbury, UK. I might only be 18 but I've written a book, maintained a popular blog and am one of the organisers behind CodeIgniter Con 2010, the first two-day UK conference and hack day for CodeIgniter.
This year's CodeIgniter Conference was a mixture of pure awesomeness, crazy clubbing and mad dashes. Some may describe it as a sham, not much went to what was a very limited plan. Saying that though we've haven't had many bad tweets regarding the weekends activities. After the conference day quite a few of us met in The Crown, and later moved onto a few bars and nightclubs. We all had fun and the tweetstream has been very positive.
Being a solo web developer has it's upsides: you can build what you like etc. But sometimes you just need to be in a team. Sometimes your skills can't cover all of your ideas, or you have too many ideas for the time you have. There are only 24 hours in a day, remember.
After finishing college my priorities have switched from getting the best grade possible whilst finding time to write a book to finding a job and earning money. Now, since I'm not exactly your ordinary teenager (if there was ever such a species) I am looking to the web to find jobs. I have always enjoyed the prospect of creating a service, or writing a downloadable piece of software. The problem is I've never been able to find the ideas or the time. Now I have the time all I need is the right idea and an awesome implementation.
I've worked fairly hard - along with Phil - to get CodeIgniter Con from an idea to reality. All we need now is to sell tickets. ;) People aren't buying tickets as fast as we'd like, but people certainly are buying tickets, and at £30 for a two day conference with six awesome speakers, it's an absolute bargain for what will be a great weekend.
Now college is over and I know my grade (the benefit of doing a BTEC) I can look forward to uni! Having visited Cardiff University late last year, having accepted the offer they gave me and having already applied for student finance and my place in the halls; I am immensely excited to be going there in September.
So I'm done with college, I've written about it before but this time I get to speak about the whole process and everything that bugged me. This is mostly a huge rant but then again, I have nothing good to say about Shrewsbury College.
