Adam Griffiths

Hi, I'm Adam Griffiths, a Computer Science Student and Freelance Web Applications and CodeIgniter developer based in Shrewsbury, UK. I might only be 18 but I've written a book, maintained a popular blog and am one of the organisers behind CodeIgniter Con 2010, the first two-day UK conference and hack day for CodeIgniter.

CodeIgniter Con 2010: It's happening

I've worked fairly hard - along with Phil - to get CodeIgniter Con from an idea to reality. All we need now is to sell tickets. ;) People aren't buying tickets as fast as we'd like, but people certainly are buying tickets, and at £30 for a two day conference with six awesome speakers, it's an absolute bargain for what will be a great weekend.

The Conference

The conference day (Day 1) is by far the most popular day amongst the community. We have six awesome speakers all talking about something uniquely different.

I am talking about CodeIgniter 2.0, the newest version of CodeIgniter; I'll be covering all the new parts of the framework and even how to use Mercurial to get your code into the CodeIgniter core. Phil Sturgeon will be talking about running an open source CodeIgniter project and his experiences running the PyroCMS project. Elliot Haughin will be giving a talk on socialising with CodeIgniter, how to integrate the new Facebook Graph API into your CodeIgniter projects. Joel Gascoigne will be giving a talk on using CodeIgniter in a startup, talking about implementing ideas and turning them into revenue streams. Dean Howe will be showing you how to get up and running with CodeIgniter, and how to turn regular PHP classes into full-blown CodeIgniter libraries. Finally, Kevin Prince will be talking about using CodeIgniter in a production environment, using CodeIgniter with other languages and how to scale your CodeIgniter application.

The Hack Day

I'm not sure why more people aren't buying Hack Day tickets, as it'll be great fun. We'll all get together into teams and build an app for the day. We'll also be letting people give small talks on anything they find during the development sessions. Finally at the end of the day a member of the team will present their application to the whole group and everyone will vote for who they think is the best application. The winners will receive a prize.

I think a few people might be new to CodeIgniter are put off by the Hack Day because they won't know enough to get going. If this is you don't be!! CodeIgniter is easy to pick up and there'll be other developers there to help you get to grips with it. If on the other hand you are an experienced developer not wanting to waste time on a small app, don't be!! I know of some people who have been to hack days, built an app with a group of people and ended up taking it further and adding a business model. That could happen at CodeIgniter Con 2010, but you'll have to buy a ticket to find out. :)

CodeIgniter Con 2010 is being held at the Trinity Arts Centre, Bristol on August 14 & 15. Conference Day tickets are £20 whilst Hack Day tickets are only £10 - £30 for a two day conference like this is an absolute steal. Find out more information on the CodeIgniter Con 2010 website or buy your tickets straight off the eventbrite website.
